Motivation and Desire: A Team Effort

Updated: 4 days ago

Motivation and desire go hand-in-hand — you can’t have one without the other. Desire is your “wanting” to do something; motivation is the “will” to actually achieve it. Everyone struggles with this balance, and figuring it out is something we all work on throughout life.

In my own experience, I’ve had many moments where I’ve had to enact a sense of motivation in order to attain my desires. For example, meeting grade requirements for university or getting daily exercise. These are hard feats, but when broken down over a period of time, are really quite easy.

We’ll use university as an example. To start, I create a layout of my end goal.

I figure out what the overall goal is and the steps within the process to get there. First, I start by researching what university I’d like to go to. After selecting one, I find out any prerequisites or requirements essential for it. Then I forge a path for myself in which I can reach them all. This is typically the simpler part and I find that the difficulty appears when actually following the plan. As it’s one thing to say something and another to do it.

To reiterate, the motivation enters once you’ve set your goal and you’re now putting it into motion. I muster up my own motivation through prayer, meditation, and a strong desire. You can use these strategies to help you as well or find your own! Although, one of the most important tools is a bucket of patience. All in all, motivation and desire are key factors when it comes to the creation and execution of your goals.

Thanks for sharing. "To start, I create a layout of my end goal." This stands out to me and reminds me of Stephen Covey's habit #2 - Begin with the end in mind.
